Fashion for spring 2011

Over-the-top romance and glamour

Jewelry takes on epic proportions in spring 2011. Romantic and glamorous are the words to describe other trends.

Janet Bernard I

t’s wonderful to be a woman this spring, with so many fash- ion trends to choose from. Te maxi dress, flow-y, romantic materials, gorgeous shoes: the choices have never been more

flattering no matter what your body type. Jewelry has been the fashion story for the past few years. We’ve

watched bling get bigger, shinier and more decorative with each passing season. Big silver neck baubles and large loopy earrings have been

everywhere. Chunky hammered metal, hanging in links, deco- rate necks but so do giant metal flowers, which also adorn wrists and fingers. Giant flowers show up again to complement flow-y, romantic clothing. Layered neckwear is still in. Tis is all very helpful for women of a certain shape who may

want to focus attention on their best features. Spring will bring a return to natural materials: wood, shells,

bone, multi-strand collars of coloured seed pearls, and long chains of crystals. Big, bold and oversized necklaces continue to predominate. Leather oſten holds heſty, washer-like metallic links together. Multiple bangles, both chunky and clunky are worn in stacks

that can cover the forearm. Big is the watchword for ear ornaments. Chandelier-type

earrings are hot this spring, as are huge metals disks. A no-no: don’t pair oversize necklaces with big earrings – it’s one or the other.

Other accessories Shoes are significant in size and emphasis to balance the big

decorations up top. Clogs with heels, platforms and wedgies are all out there with open toes and high-heeled or platform sandals held on with ribbons and bows or, more sedately, by wide leather straps. Kitten heels, cat-eye sunglasses, belt purses, wide horizontal

stripes and last, but very much not least, crop tops, are in for summer for the more fashion adventurous. Materials

Featherweight is the word for this year’s sheer, gauzy or filmy

materials made of silks, fine cottons and blends. Lace, crochet- work and macramé are also on display. In the hair category, long, loose and flowing tresses with

wavy curls or poker straight are both signature styles right now. Long hair is also worn in topknots, looped in sections at the back or in pony tails depending on what you're doing or wher you are going. Te ragged face wrap is still there for medium length hair.
